Calculated Shipping Explanation
The calculated shipping costs are calculated by the carriers such as: USPS, UPS, FEDEX, DHL, etc.
Calculated Shipping is one option that a seller may choose when the seller does not offer Free Shipping.
With Calculated Shipping, the buyer’s shipping cost is automatically calculated based on the buyer’s delivery address and the seller’s sending address.
Of course the package weight and dimensions also determine the cost of shipping.
The main reason that a seller may choose to use Calculated Shipping is to give potential buyers the lowest possible shipping costs as compared to One-Rate Shipping. (we explain One-Rate Shipping below).
Lower shipping costs are one way to increase sales!
When a seller chooses Calculated Shipping, a buyer will be shown this Calculated Shipping cost on the Product Detail page and also on the Checkout page.
Calculated Shipping Example
You are a seller on the East Coast of the USA in New Jersey.
You sell charging cords, which do not weigh much and do not take up much space in a shipping box or padded envelope.
Example #1: At Checkout, a buyer that lives in New Jersey may be shown a Calculated Shipping cost of $3.00.
This is an inexpensive shipping cost, because the buyer also lives on the East Coast in the same state as the seller.
The package WILL NOT need to travel far, therefore an inexpensive shipping cost was calculated.
Example #2: At Checkout, a buyer that lives in California may be shown a Calculated Shipping cost of $6.00.
This is a more expensive shipping cost, because the buyer lives very far away from the seller on the West Coast.
The package WILL need to travel quite far, therefore a more expensive shipping cost was calculated.
One-Rate Shipping Explanation
One-Rate Shipping is one option that a seller may choose when the seller does not offer Free Shipping.
With One-Rate Shipping, no matter where the buyer's delivery address, the seller will charge the buyer the same shipping cost.
One rate shipping is especially useful for some USPS One-Rate Flat Rate services.
One-rate shipping is a popular choice for lightweight items because the costs remain relatively consistent, regardless of whether the destination is near or far from the seller’s sending address.

Note: Sellers may also ship outside of the 48 continental US states, but we recommend that you proceed with caution, because depending upon the carriers, it may become expensive to ship.
However, USPS does offer some One Rate Flat Rate options that are the same price as in the 48 continental US states.
For reference, there are (3) methods that a seller can choose to handle shipping costs for items shipped to buyers:
- Free Shipping
- Calculated Shipping
- One Rate Shipping
Sellers can choose one of these (3) methods when listing an item for sale on the List an Item page.
Within these (3) methods, sellers also need to choose a carrier, such as: USPS, UPS, FED-EX, etc.
Within these carriers, sellers also need to choose a particular service such as Ground Advantage, Next Day Air, 3 Day Select, Ground, etc.
